The Pattern Shop features all the tools and equipment relevant to working with wooden patterns.

The line shaft, which hangs from the ceiling, is driven by a single steam engine or another single power source. It runs a number of machines, such as lathes, table saws, drill presses and sanders. These machines are used to cut out and produce wooden patterns.

The wooden patterns are made of hard woods and used to form the sand to make iron castings.

Industries, factories and railroads required thousands of cast iron castings.
