The Grand Trunk Pacific Railway was started in 1903 and ran from
Winnipeg, Manitoba to Prince Rupert, BC through Edmonton, Alberta. Because
the Canadian government had financed or guaranteed loans to about 90% of
the Grand Trunk Pacific's total debt (as they had with a number of small
railways in Canada), the Canadian National Railway was formed in 1919 to
take over all of these small railways and did take over the Grand Trunk
Pacific in 1920.
In 1921 the car was transferred from the west to Ottawa for the
Minister of Transport to use. It was numbered 104, and was also used for
track inspections and train wreck investigations. It kept that listing
until 1937 when it was re-numbered to 101 for general government use.
In 1956 the car was re-assigned to Montreal, given number 95, and
placed in the headquarters "pool" reserve. Five years later the business
car was relocated to Edmonton where it remained until 1975, at which time
it was retired.
A private individual in Calgary purchased the car in 1976 and later
leased it to the CPR, where it was used as a Superintendent's car. Three
Valley Gap purchased the car in December of 1985. |
